I've always wondered if there were a negative side to venting valves--that of creating an opportunity for internal corrosion. True, most valves have a hole at the top and bottom (for good reason), but could one that gets in the airway foster contamination by saliva and just plain crud inside the piston? If the pistons were monel or stainless, that would be a different matter altogether, but these are plain old nickel-plated brass.

An external air channel recessed into the piston surface would be much better, but then that would require that you make your own pistons.

I guess I'm not convinced that the venting procedure is entirely safe.
