I grew up being familiar with the religion of High School Band in Texas. The (several) directors that I have known to think that way were, to a man, tyrants that wouldn't be allowed to teach my kids to tie their shoes.

The student with "a Vandoren 5RV Lyre with a Bonade ligature on a Leblanc clarinet" might stand out, but that is probably because they sound better than the rest of the section. The director that insists that every student in every section play the same equipment is as criminally stupid as the shoe salesman that opens a store that only sells one style of size-10 men's shoe. The most successful directors in Texas now are the ones that graduated from college in the last 1/4 of the 20th century, and are therefore not as influenced by Victorian-era ideas about education.
