I wasn't referring to orchestras where this type of crap -

"questionable extremes of adding articulations and even notes that aren't indicated" -

occurs.

I still have rarely heard a bass trombonist execute an idiomatic artistic bass line.

Another simple Christmas (solo bass trombone) excerpt comes to mind: Occasionally I've head a bass trombonist or two who "got it" and knew how to launch those measures in the little bass line "solo" in "Waltz of the Flowers". Still, most of them attack this except with the classic "RACK / RACK / RACK / RACK" style.
