According to a link that C(G) publicly sent me lower in this thread, this apparently was a Verdi cimbasso. If that is so, and "today...[t]he instruments have biggers bores as well and are optimized to produce a much greater volume of sound than in previous eras", why not use an F tuba or compensating euphonium to match to huge Bach 42-ish tenor trombones, instead of scrambling to borrow one of those latter 20th Century Jim Self-y contraptions?
