I am was asked the other day if I knew why Prokofiev wrote such awesome tuba parts. We figured that he must have had a really great player at his disposal (or in mind) when writing his music, or at least one who's playing was very well suited to that style of writing. If this isn't the case, then how did he know the tuba's capabilities so well, and why did he like it so much? I am not by any means a Prokofiev scholar, but I would be very interested if anyone could shed some light on this, just for curiosity's sake. Thanks.

Dan
