I would kinda think that if some standard orchestral piece had a double-high G, A, or Bb (??) written in the first trumpet part, it would be OK for the principal trumpet player to lay down his C trumpet and grab his piccolo trumpet.

This oxcart solo for the tuba is the exact comparable situation for the orchestral tuba player, and the baritone horn is the tuba player's exact equivalent of a trumpet player's piccolo trumpet...

...now if the the tuba player can't play the baritone very well, that's another discussion.
