While your air test is on a parallel track, the problem with it is that the air column of a brass instrument is relatively fixed. The mouthpiece throat and the air passage (mostly cartiledge) are not flexible.

The real issue is the amplitude of the lip vibration. The greater the amplitude the louder the sound. It is a physical science truth. The more you excite and air column, the louder it sounds. Look at a guitar string as you pluck it softly, and then louder. You'll witness the change in amplitude. It's a wonderful thing.

Further down on this thread I discussed that more in depth and I said I was inspired to go practice, which I will now do... but I wanted to say something about fast/hard air.
