I recommend the trumpet book to my occaisonal student for two reasons.

First, it teaches reading a different clef. Most of the music world exists in treble clef and it's a good idea to at least know the territory.

Second, the studies, if fingered with the regular Bb trumpet fingerings, work as designed on instruments in any key.

I also dangle the idea of playing in brass band, and using trumpet literature to supplement one's choices, instead of looking for works written expressly for tuba. Currently, our brass band is trying to recruit another BBb bass--and is facing the prospect of a bunch of otherwise capable BBb players saying "I can't learn another clef".
