A student of mine has the rotary version. I think it is a great tuba. I almost bought this particualr instrument, because of its wonderful open response and beautiful sound. I compared it carefully to the Rudy Meinl 5/4 that I've had for about 5 years. My conclusions were that the Rudy projected slightly better into the hall and its pitch was better. I still ocasionally have a twinge of regret for not having purchased the Cluberson when I hear that beautiful warm sound.
I feel that there is some unhandiness in the design of the Culberson. The 5th slide placement hampers access to the 1st slide(also a problem on the old B&S F tubas), and the lever to operate the second valve slide is a long way away from the 1st slide. It all seems a rather illogical set-up. The Rudy works better from this standpoint also.
