The problem I have with ANY plating that is harder than the brass base, is that any damage or wear to the mouthpiece leads to the brass pitting UNDER the plating, resulting in an unbearably rough surface. This can be seen on most Denis Wick mouthpieces, which seem to have a strike coat of nickel, then silver or gold. The brass pits under the nickel, quite quickly. Also, any repair work or replating is virtually impossible without chemically stripping first, and that eats into the base metal too.
