I suspect the dermatitis was more of a result of reaction to nickel, as chromium is usually plated over a "strike coat" of nickel, usually on top of an undercoating of copper. Many people are very sensitive to nickel irritation.

Has anyone ever tried a plating of rhodium instead of silver? Rhodium plating is used quite a bit in the aerospace and jewelry fields. It's bright white, nontoxic, hard and weather-resistant and will take a blindingly high polish (it's used in reflectors).
