Tubas and Test-tubes

An interesting topic was brought up in my "history (and future)of knowledge" class the other day. The question was "What is the difference between art and science?" As a tubist, I would say that I am an artist and a scientist because while playing involves a great deal of creativity, there are techniques and engineering behind every note I play. However, I don't believe that playing the tuba is a true science because though there is a method to playing, I have the choice of not following the "rules" while still making art (however bad it may be). I was wondering what the musicians on this post thought about the question and if anyone has thought of the matter differently than I had. I hope that the philosophy behind what we do stirs up a little interest on the BBS.
