Your spelling of America is usually used to imply a socialist approach, and yet that would be the alternative to what you describe. One of the things that makes this country great is our capitalist marketplace. honest competition between manufacturers is the same thing as whatever the market will bear. On the other hand, exclusive distribution contracts do artifically drive up prices and I think they should be reviewed in light of anti-trust laws. What would be immoral would be to keep prices lower than the market would be willing to bear and have a company not be able to survive and continue to pay it's employees. The profit motive is what keeps this country great, and to deny it is unrealistic. Who are you to tell someone what is a reasonable markup at which to sell their product?

Still, if people don't like the product or pricing of a particular vendor they can vote with their feet and buy something else. If someone didn't find value in these products, they wouldn't still be on the market. The idea to sell instruments with colored lacquer isn't new, it just hasn't been available on tubas commonly in the past. Clearly there's a market for this or they wouldn't be made. If you don't like it don't buy one.

The person who traded the Martin clearly received what he believed was a reasonable trade. The Martin may have been a great old horn by many standards, but what is the reasonable market price for any BBb tuba? If he now has something that he can handle, and he is happy with it, then who are we to complain?

Flame away!
