Well, yeah, to the guy who traded his Martin for a St. Pete, this was a fair deal. Who knows, maybe this Martin is a dog, too, and isn't worth much more than a St. Pete.
The stickler is that everybody who really knows their tubas also knows that a typical Martin is a top-notch horn, and this shop could easily make much more cash off this trade than they would reveal to the customer making the trade (who, it's assumed, doesn't know enough about tubas to realize that he had just been taken for a ride).
It's like somebody taking a Ferrari to a Ford dealership and letting the dealer convince him to trade straight across for a new Focus since "it's obviously what you need."
(well, maybe not a Ferrari... insert your favorite obscure-but-fantastic car in its place)
