Maybe it is when you are changing to keys on what I call the "back side" of the instrument...the keys which require the use of a lot of 4th valve, 2nd and 4th valve, or 2nd and 3rd valve notes. These notes add SEVERAL feet of length to the air column. I really can't say as I've ever noticed a tremendous difference in keys which require a lot of 2-3, 4, or 2-4 combinations, though. Maybe they DO, but I just haven't ever thought about it...

...Come to think of it, if my guess lines up with the phenomenon that you are describing, maybe I HAVE noticed a difference. Currently, I have two "BBb-to-CC" tuba shortening jobs in progress. Right now, BOTH of them are the approximate length of a BB (natural) tuba. Boy, it sure is EASY to play "The Ride..." on those tubas, as it is in "home" key and those notes in B major just jump right out.
