Portability perhaps. You can carry a DAT recorder and microphones with cables with you to different venues to record. Also handy for recitals or other performances. If you get one of the Sony's such as the D-8, D-100, or PCM-M1 then you can carry it in your pocket with very small microphones to record live performances where a larger recording device would not be welcomed. The DAT recorder to drool over though is the Tascam DA-P1. Phantom Power and other goodies on that one.

DAT is superior to minidisc in sound quality and recording time, but minidisc is even more compact and random access along with being more mainstream these days. I prefer DAT mostly due to the sound quality issue. DAT is not compressed like minidisc so has less artifacts. With a good set of microphones and an excellent playback system such as a headphone amp and Sennheiser headphones you can get a fairly accurate representation of your tone quality. With lesser playback systems and cheaper analog cassette recorders you can listen for time and pitch but get inaccurate feedback on souynd quality.
