So a composer whose music was about to be premiered went on a rant because no information about the piece or about the composer was in the program?

Why is that a bad thing?

If I was going to play a concerto, I would want something in the program about me. And something about the piece I was about to play. I probably would have put alot of hard work into the evening, and for it to not be recognized would probably hurt my feelings.

And isn't that one use of a program anyway, besides selling advertising? To inform the audience of the music and the performers they are about to hear? To serve as a record of the performance and the intentions of the composer? Don't musicians view the programs of new pieces to gain insight into the piece?

If I'm mistaking your posting in any way, please correct me. But I have trouble seeing your argument.

And if it is against new music and the funding of composers, I am rarely against the fostering of something that is new and of potential value to our culture. Pornography makes alot of money, but is not what I would want our society to be known for. These composers do teach for a living. If their students were not successful, the Universities could fire them. Or make them teach basic theory. And if no musician wanted to perform their works, I don't think anyone is holding a gun to the music directors of the world to play anything they don't like. And I don't think composers write unlistenable or uninspired music. Remember, Wagner's music was hated by the followers of Brahms. I try not to attack something, simply because I may not understand it. Or even if I don't like it.

Now that I think of it. Were you even at the concert, or did you just read this somewhere? Did you hear the piece in question, or is this just some philosophical comment on our society and how we waste taxpayer dollars. Because the US and state governments spend lots more on other wasteful programs than education and composers. We're all supporters of the arts here. I don't think we should be attacking our own kind.

Of course all of this is just my opinion.
