I wholeheartedly agree with Lee's first paragraph. It's about music making, not just your part. Be a major factor in making the music and you will be recognized for doing it. Bitch about petty things, and you will be recognized for that.

As far as Lee's second paragraph, the parts we play in orchestra often serve other roles. Much of our literature such as that written by Wagner, Prokoviev, Rachmanioff, Stravinsky, etc... for the orchestra requires us to serve as a fifth horn, a support for the lower strings, even a tuned percussion instrument and perhaps a solo here and there in addition to being a bass voice in the bone section. Recognizing these things and learning to adjust to what these composers intended the purpose of the tuba to be has a much better chance of you getting the recognition you want (and feel you deserve) than complaining about not hearing your instrument called out in rehearsal. It's all about the music.
