Role of EEb

I play EEb in a brass band and am wondering what role people think the EEb plays in a brass band? Also wondering what sort of tone is considered to normally come from an EEb. How often are EEb used outside of a brass band and why would they be used? (I play a Besson 982 Sovereign).
