Out of curiousity I listened to the Fried Mahler 2 1st mvt after my last note. I'll admit it was better than I remembered it. I'm even more impressed by Fried's interpretation than you seem to be. With regard to those who may think I'm dissing players of earlier times, I'm not. By all acounts, Wagner would have engaged the best players he could get for the opening of Beyreuth. I'm sure they were the best of their time and did their best. But I'm also certain that it was much more difficult for them than it is for their counterparts today. Players today have greater facility and better equipment, and eons of hindsight. What's lacking is the depth of conviction we hear in earlier performances that transcend technical difficulties.
