I have seen several people playing tuba with beards and mustaches. Examples can be: George Wall (Royal Opera House), Jim Gourlay, Stein-Erik Tafjord (norwegian jazz player).
I played with a beard for a while, and it worked quite well, I just had to practise how to make a good sound with it at first, then after watch the pressure I put on very carefully.
And if I'm not mistaken, I seem to remember Klaus posting a picture of himself playing with a beard a little further down the list. Perhaps you can ask him further advice.
