This may be a dumb question, but I have seen some tubas that seem to have some sort of nylon black or cloth "thing" attatched to certain points on the horn, normally the side of the horn under the leadpipe. What is the purpose of this? I believe I have seen some trombones with something similar attatched to the slide handle. The best example I have seen is here:
