Two factors need to be considered when thinking of the old NY '47 recording. First of all, Walter was a close friend and pupil of Mahler, so he could be thought as getting as close to the "horse's mouth" in terms of interperting mahler. The other factor is that back in the day orchestra's had a lot of their tempi dictated by the recording medium. But I think not enough credence is given to older recordings. I'm not too sure how much to do with Walters recording has to do w/ time constraints, but it should not be forgotten that he studyed music and how to conduct from the master himself.
