Are you referring to the top-paying New York Philharmonic, which not only holds "wide-open" auditions, but whom also runs possibly the most performance-based audition procedures of all professional symphony orchestras?

Have you checked into the education of arguably the most important principal chair in the New York Philharmonic, their Principal Oboist (no music degrees)?

As few orchestras pay more than New York, I'm confused by your statement.
