I agree that many F tubas are too big, too open, going for the CC tuba feel,
familiarity and experience from the player's perspective. There are a few
F's that I think are worth trying. The current version of the Hirsbrunner
piston F is fantastic, IMHO. I don't know if Hirsbrunner makes different
sized F tubas, but this one is of medium size (now that's specific!).
In other words, not like the Yamaha 621 (small) or the old Kurath (large).
The new piston valve Meinl-Weston F is also fantastic, IMHO. Based on the
45S rotor model, but in piston version. The small Meinl-Weston F (model 182?)
is terrific, 5 rotors, however, on the smaller side of the range. I don't
know how this tuba works in orchestra, comments, anyone? The Meinl-Weston
Hilgers model F tuba is also terrific, if anyone has the MW catalog, it's
the medium size one, not the large model. Beautiful sound, just plays great.
I've played a bit on the new (well, new to me) Willson F, 5 rotor version,
that seemed very good. However, I only played it for a few minutes. I'm
interested to see other opinions as well.

Best wishes,
