Getting the kid a tuba.

My son is a freshman in high school. He has been playing the tuba in school and taking private lessons for 2 years now and I have reason to believe he is talented, all prejudices aside. He is now asking for his own tuba which he is willing to pay many years of hard earned cash for, about $3000. He needs a BBb and he is enamored with the idea of the 4th valve on the side of the tuba for what sounds like good reasons. He would prefer an older, quality instrument with a few dents to a newer less expensive model. Is he on a wild goose chase? Will he be able to find such an instrument? How sound is his reasoning. Do I sound as harried as I feel?
I know that the only really good way to choose an instrument is to sit down and play them until you find the one that suits you, but we are on a tight schedule and we apparently live in the middle of the Great Tuba Desert because I have been able to find precious few, new or used, locally.
What's a dad to do?
