Audio neophyte questions:

my end goal is to be able to mix separately recorded tracks into a single recording which matches the quality of the individual tracks. I haven't yet purchased any components, but I'm trying to make sure that my first purchase, of a good recorder and mic, will be a good fit for the ultimate objective, and I am trying to learn enough as I go that I can plan the rest of the components needed. I'm currently trying to decide between CDRW and DAT tape. Some questions I have:

Are there home audio mixers (stand alone or software based) which can read a single CD or DAT tape with all the tracks and do the buffering, mixing, synchronizing and balancing to generate the resulting single track?

Do recorders offer any features that simplify the task of synchronizing the different tracks?
