Point well taken. I find this phenomenon in mostly the Germanic Romantic Repetoire. Also, I have heard a Sibelius 2 with Bernstein/VPO that holds true. However, that may be more Bernstein than the VPO. This is not something new to me. My favorite recording of Brahms 2 is with Istvan Kertesz and the VPO. While the ensemble can be ragged, the emotion and intensity is wonderful, particularly the 2nd movement. There is a recording of Furtwangler and the VPO doing Bruckner 8 from 1944 that is a live performance. It is the best live recording I have ever heard, the glory of Bruckner at it's best. I must ammend a statement from my original post. The VPO plays as massively, IN THERE OWN DISTINCT WAY, as the CSO, but it seems to me that they place the emphasis on the music first and the procedure second. Thanks for replying.
