OK, you got me curious enough to go back and pay more attention to what I actually do:

I DON'T "shift" the mouthpiece on my face, but when I get down past Eb or D, I start allowing air between my lips and my teeth, in order to allow my lips to flop around at slower frequencies. The tone doesn't change when I do this, because I do it more or less depending on how (after all, "ridiculously" - we are NEVER asked to play these notes, unless for no money playing some "new" music thing.) low and how loud I am playing. When I move back up to the reasonable range, I allow less and less air behind my teeth until I get back up to about five ledger lines, where my lips are again firm against my teeth. I tested myself by playing one of those silly low FFF's (F just below the range of the piano) very softly. Since it was so soft, I was allowing no air behind my teeth even though it was very, very low.
