There are two kinds of chrome plating: decorative chrome and industrial chrome. Industrial chrome plating is used to create a hard, long-wearing surface. It does not completely cover the surface: there are voids. It is intended for use in lubricated environments. If your mouthpiece was given an industrial chrome finish, it would soon begin to corrode (exposed to saliva). Exposing your lips to the resulting oxides might well lead to the rash you described. However, if you had cleaned your mouthpiece with alcohol after each use, this problem would have been avoided.

Cleaning a mouthpiece after each use is a good idea with any mouthpiece, no matter what its composition. Typically, we don't like to use dirty tableware, so why put a dirty mouthpiece in contact with one of the more intimate parts of our body?

You agree that there is no acoustical difference. Therefore, your disagreement with me is not "total", only partial.
