The newly founded Chicago Brass Band, which Colin Holman (Music Director) himself has shied away from calling “his band,” has its goals, vision, and mission stated on its website (see link below).

Although the NABBA competition is, undeniably, a major focus of the year’s activities, it is not the “end-all, be-all” of the band’s functions. It is merely a means to an end of achieving those stated goals, vision, and mission. Individuals can become fanatic about the competitions, as Brian says. But I don’t think that picture accurately describes the functioning of any of the three Chicago area brass bands in the last few years.

Tony explained very well the purpose of Central Ohio Brass Band’s participation in the NABBA Competitions each year. I believe that not only Chicago Brass Band, but also Prairie Brass Band and Illinois Brass Band share the same philosophy about competition participation.

An important point of Tony’s post—tuba and euph parts are GREAT in brass bands!

Sean, was the Brass Band a good experience for you, and are you missing it now that it has been eliminated?
