I agree that the sound of a tuba is unrelated to its finish. Other factors are far more important. I had a nickel-plated horn for many years and decided not to go that way again because once it goes gray it won't go back, and because it can flake off. I had a couple of laquered tubas that looked great at first, but laquer really looks bad when it gets old. I bought a new tuba with bright silver plating, and have been polishing it for years. When you get some bad spots on it they just get worse as the years go by. If you rub it too much, the brass starts to shine through. I decided that if I had a choice, my next one would be raw brass. A daily rubdown keeps it looking good, and a good polishing makes it look great, and the finish never wears off. It can be yucky if you only pick up the horn once a year, but won't be a problem if you play it regularly.
