Can you believe it? The United States Supreme Court recently supported a lawyer's argument that high school tubists must submit to the kinds of random drug tests high school athletes can be subjected to. As reported on Saturday's NPR show, "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me," a midwestern school system (perhaps in Kansas -- Scott Watson, where are you when we need you?) decided to require drug testing of all school representatives in addition to athletes. Band, choir, and FFA participants were now included as well. Two students (one in the band and one in the choir) sued and their case went all the way to the US Supreme Court. Lawyers for the school board argued that a student controlling a 1,200 animal (I assume they meant an FFA member and not a marching band member here)or a heavy metal tuba in a marching band were so potentially dangerous that they too must submit to drug testing. The court ruled in favor of the school board's rule. Isn't it great that we tubists are now getting the kind of respect we deserve? And we thought the only person likely to get hurt from our instrument was ourselves?
