Importance of learning scales

My band director has been drilling our band on scales for 10 minutes every day. Considering class is only 45 minutes long, this is kind of irritating. I mean, we're trying to learn Prelude, Siciliano and Rondo, and the woodwinds really can't play their parts at all, and instead of working on it, we're playing ALL TWELVE SCALES EVERY DAY!!!!!

I know you're all going to disagree, but think about it...if you know a chromatic scale, you know all the notes. Why should we have to learn any other scales? Have you ever thought about that? My parents are on the Boosters and they say that since our director only has a bachelor's degree, he might not understand that we don't really need to practice scales. What's a good way to make my director realize this without sounding rude and losing my chair?

I would appreciate any help!
