If the composer wanted it down an octave, he would have written it that way. Is playing music about serving what WE want to do or serving the composer's wishes? I don't feel like I'm "enlightened" enough to make decisions about changing someone else's work.
My students know that if they want to get my attention, go ahead and drop. They'll get my attention, alright!(Insert demonic laughter here);)
