Get off the high horse there buddy. No poor freshman starting college is in a position to take out tens of thousands of dollars in loans, but that is the only way many poorer students can afford to get a college education.
I and many others worked jobs while in college, which greatly diminishes both the educational and social aspects of college life. I and many others also needed to take out tens of thousands of dollars in college loans because our incomes were frequently below $10,000/year. Most college jobs DON'T cover all living and educational expenses. Just try to buy $15,000 worth of tubas and other necessary equipment on $5,000/year while also paying tuition and other life espenses.
So "shudder" all you want, but college loans are/were a necessity for many of us.
