Locally, perhaps the most respected flute instructor (unquestionable character / really nice person / by far, more students who've moved on to bigger and better things than any other teacher around here, etc.) was fired from their position without notice.

Apparently, one of their students recently made a failing grade on a recital and decided to dredge up something about this teacher making the suggestion to the student that (three years ago) the student might consider consulting a doctor about performance anxiety medication. The school decided (no hearing, no nothing) that the instructor had engaged in an "inappropriate relationship" with the student (????), and dismissed this instructor (yeah, ' had been there for at least a decade) without notice.

If you think it sounds like something was left out of the story, the fact is that nothing was omitted. That's all there is to it. So, you male teachers are not the only ones who can be taken to the gallows on b.s. charges made by disgruntled students. It can happen to male or female instructors and can be perpetrated by male or female students. If you're workin' on a degree to "qualify" for that $20,000 - $45,000 band directin' or college teachin' job, (if the OU incident wasn't warning enough) you might want to think twice about what you're doing. For that kind of money, do you want to document and videotape EVERY conversation with EVERY student (then still get fired and you can't afford a lawyer)?
